This was partly inspired by a memoir I edited for a woman who insisted she knew one of the loves of her life in a previous life. I blended that inspiration with some weird dreams I was having leading to my wedding recently. I hope it’s enjoyed. Best wishes y’all 🤗
__________
Was that you in Morocco
The taste of medjool dates
Caramel sweetness
Sin upon your skin
Before we knew what sin was
Before the life where
Thomas stood to say
I was in the way,
before I was “undeserving” of life.
Or was that you
in the highland spring
fields upon fields of dandelions
we ran thru joyous free
drums in the background mimicking
the sound of our heartbeats.
Did I go by Rachel then?
Until the winter set in
and we discovered love
wasn’t enough to sustain us.
What about that snow
we had in June, the tune
of kisses on Arctic tundra
without lips, eyelashes
touching cheek, butterflies
the softness there,
backdrop of peaks
mistaking passion for freedom
before I fell into the depths
of the icy lake.
What about the life
we had no names?
tongues fur teeth
bite claw rut
mud paw scratch
cry howl yowl
fur too wet
clawing against
inevitability
then stillness.
The last I remember
gunsmoke rising in the hills
the grays and blues
looked the same from a distance.
Sophie was just born
her blonde curls unfurled
in the bassinet
a trick of the light
and she was an angel.
I lost you in the flash
I lost her in the flash
I’ve been so lost
I’ve been searching
ever since.
So tell me
I remember you
from lives lived before
Do you remember me?
